Chapter 9 opens with the fifth angel and a star falling to earth, Wormwoods brother maybe, and being given a key to open the “bottomless pit”. I keep being forced into what might be called cognitive dissonance. I am not a scientist but I taught science in a middle school. Astronomers tell us that the stars are great balls of plasma, not he’s. What would a ball of plasma do with a key? How does a ball of plasma have personhood unless you are going with the ancient pagan view of the universe? Or I can simply go with this all being figurative. That is my default for anything that is not clear in Revelation. I will try to be open to the word but refuse to be gullible to the eschatology enthusiasts.
My mind starts to wander and wonder. We have locusts with the power of scorpions who look like horses and have the face of men with lions teeth. In Texas we have grasshoppers, scorpions, horses and men. Near by there are zoos with lions. If a locust looks like a horse then why is it called a locust? My imagination short circuits. If you take this literally then you should have a lot of questions. If you take it figuratively you have even more.
In verse 4 they are told not to hurt the grass but since all the grass was destroyed in the last chapter that doesn’t carry much weight. And it talks about people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. That implies there are those who do. Most people who delve deep into Revelation would say this is the Great Tribulation and all believers were already raptured, thus no one would have the mark of God on their forehead.
We move to act 6. A massive army is turned loose to kill a third of the men. It doesn’t say if this is a third of the original population or of the remainder. Either way we are now up to two-thirds. The description of this army fits in with the locusts.

Welcome to Varied Expressions of Worship
This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.
Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.
