Welcome to Varied Expressions of Worship

This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.

Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.

Opus 2026-287: Benefits of Diabetes

I have a friend who’s going through a lot of trauma because of a retina problem.  As far as I know diabetes is not part of his package.  It emerged suddenly and they got him in for surgery within two weeks, which gives you an indication of how bad it was.  And he spent a week on his belly and things still aren’t looking good.

I don’t know that I expect this to happen to me because I have diabetes, or at least at one time I had raging diabetes.  When I admitted that reality, it made me first of all change my lifestyle.  Many people with type two diabetes can beat it back or at least put it back in the garage if they will change the way they do things.  People being what they are we tend to want a pill instead of not eating so much.

I was blessed with a fear of the needle and so I managed to distance myself and lose the weight.  The problems went away.  I am still diabetic, but there are no side effects at this point.

Which brings me to the second benefit.  I get better health care than I would if I was not diabetic.  It’s amazing how many adjustments are made to things simply because you have a history of diabetes.  I can go in and have my feet examined on a regular basis.  When I go see the doctor for my eyes I pretty much get the whole treatment, including a new prescription, glaucoma checks, and a very careful examination of my retina.  All of that is covered by insurance.  Why?  Because I have been diabetic.

I am aware when I write things like this that everybody’s diabetes is different.  You can do everything right and it still doesn’t get better.  You can get the wrong doctors.  You can simply refuse to change anything.  And one of the things that surprise me was that many people with diabetes do not take the medication that is prescribed.

We’re all different.  Although it’s irritating to have to worry about my A1c, it is still a joy to know that there are benefits in my infirmities.

Opus 2026-286 Now or Never

I am in the early stages of a long term project of reading through the Hadith.  The Hadiths are one of the holy books of Islam.  They are much longer than the Koran and thus people are less familiar with them.  As I begin my journey I am surprised at what I find.  I wonder what percentage of Muslims ever read their holy books.

In a sense it is not a fair question.  Why just single out Muslims?  How many Christians actually read their Bible?  From experience and conversation the number is low.  Of course that brings up the question of whether you can really be a Christian is you don’t read God’s word.  Since I am asking I would wonder about Islam the same way.  Or Buddhism.  The few people I know who claim to be Buddhist seem to know less about it than I do.  I am guessing this is common across the board.

If you claim to have a faith I encourage you to get serious about reading the holy books of your religion.  You may find that they do not reflect who you are or whom you want to be.  If your religion is Communism then I urge you to read the Communist Manifesto.  If you are a rational human being with basic decent values you may be shocked at what you find.

Read while you can.  Make sure you are on the team you signed up for.
