Welcome to Varied Expressions of Worship

This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.

Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.

Opus 2025-151: Strangers and Sojourners

I was thinking about the terms that I’ve been reading in Deuteronomy, and what comes to mind for foreigners residing with Israel as strangers and sojourners.

The terms legal and illegal or not specifically used, but there are places where the strangers are expected to follow the law.  They are expected to be circumcised if they are going to stay.  I think at one point they are allowed to participate in the Passover, but again, they must be circumcised.

So, yes, there is a certain amount of acceptance of immigrants, however, there is a clear classification of legal and illegal. The standards may be different, but the concept is there.

We should be able to transfer those concepts and standards to our society.  Treat people fairly and with dignity.  Expect them to abide by your standards of behavior.  If they don’t like it they can leave.  We would be better off if we looked at foreign visitors that way.

Opus 2023-175: Headlines: Adams Family at Work

Did you see this one?  I came across it while cruising the click bait on The Daily Wire.  It seems that the Democrat Mayor of Democrat cesspool New York City has shipped some of the illegal aliens he received from Texas to other locations.  I have two reactions:  Hypocrisy and Genius.

The hypocrisy is doing the same thing that Abbot and DeSantis have done after attacking them for doing it.  Don’t they have any awareness.  I am always trying to see how the Democrats are even smart enough to steal elections.  You would think if these people are smart enough the Republicans could do it too.  Maybe that says something about Republicans.

The genius comes in the part where he seems to have shipped some of them out of the country.  The headline said the destinations included China.  What an idea.  Maybe Texas and Florida can follow suit since it must be okay if the Democrats can do it.  I already had the idea of finding an old freighter and loading the illegals on with a few MRE’s and grounding the ship on the coast of Venezuela.  No one liked it when I thought of it.  I guess I was just channeling my inner Democrat.

Life can be entertaining if we just pay attention and connect the dots.

Opus 2022-272: Venezuelan Gifthorse

Have you seen the reports that Venezuela is emptying their prisons and sending the inmates to infiltrate the United States.  To borrow from Princess Bride, you say that as if it was a bad thing.  Think about it.  It is possible that the kind of people in a Venezuela prison might be the kind of people we want.  They might be criminals but they might also just be political prisoners who spoke up for freedom and were jailed for their boldness.

It could be that we might send recruiting teams to the prisons of the Socialist countries and offer to ransom their enemies.  Maybe Texas could talk the federal government into releasing some of their political prisoners to the Lone Star State.

Opus 2022-263: Share the Joy

What would be fun would be for DeSantis and Abbott to get into a contest to see who could come up with the most creative destinations for the illegals.  Other governors might get in on the act too.

There are other rich, white, liberal enclaves that need a chance to embrace diversity.  Some of the ski resorts in Colorado would be nice.  Maybe Jackson Hole.  Kaanapali needs to get involved but it might be hard to get a bus there.  How about dropping off a bus load outside some Democrat conventions or planning sessions.  Maybe a service to local ACLU offices.  It might also be interesting to take some of them and drop them off in Canada.

This could get interesting.

Opus 2022-128: Headlines: A New Solution to the Refugee Problem

We are not the only country having a problem with immigration but Americans tend to be very self centered so we don’t realize there are people fleeing all over the world.  I was interested in a link on The Daily Wire that brought up a response being proposed in England.

It seems that Great Britain has worked out a deal with Rwanda.  Illegal immigrants will be sent to Rwanda along with some payments to help their adjustments.  There was a lot of information left out but I think the idea was to make them settle permanently in that African country.  I would have serious questions about the choice of Rwanda.  Do the terms Hutu and Tutsi ring any bells?  They are the two main tribes in Rwanda and had been killing each other at least as far back as 1952.  That eventually led to what is called the Rwanda Genocide in 1994.  We are talking about 800,000 deaths and millions of refugees.  I am hoping that things have settled down to make it safe for the people Great Britain wants to deport.

Is this something that would work for us?  We are spending uncounted billions in supporting all the illegals that are swamping our safety nets.  Is there a country somewhere in the world that would open its borders to these people if we sweetened the pot a little?  Maybe we could help them resettle in the Vatican.

It also makes me wonder if there are countries that would benefit by the influx of some of these refugees.  That is an honest question that would like an honest answer but doesn’t expect to get one.  I personally don’t see this movement of people working.  We can only hope.  They seem to have none.

Opus 2021-263: Headlines: The Dangers of “Over the River and Through the Woods...”

I heard about the 14 students from the San Diego area that were stuck in Afghanistan and then I heard that they had made it out.  I was a bit mystified when my wife told me there were 30 students still stuck in the land of the Taliban.  Something was not adding up.  Today I saw some click bait that referred to the 30 students so I decided to fall for it.

The headline at Legal Insurrection clarified some of the mystery.

“Almost 30 Students From Sacramento Remain Trapped in Afghanistan”
This was a different group of students.  As I kept reading I found that they were not your typical group of students.
“With about 1,400 students of Afghan origin within the district, Bassanelli said it’s normal for these students to go visit their home country every summer.”
Okay.  It seems that we already have a large group of emigrants who have settled in the Sacramento area.  A bunch of them decided to go home to visit granny.  Since they are public school inmates they probably paid no attention to what was going on in the world around them and are now finding it hard to get a ride home.  Or not.

Then we have this,
“‘We realized that we had about 144 students of Afghan origin who were not presently in our schools but yet enrolled,” Bassanelli explained…’”
It seems there are 144 students unaccounted for, not just 30.  Since I taught in Southern California I am used to the idea of large blocks of students going home to Mexico for the Christmas/New Years holidays.  It is an annual event.  You learn to roll with it and never did we blame the President of the United States for their absence.  I would wonder how they know that 30 are in Afghanistan.  Is that an actual count or a reasonable guess?  From the information that we seem to be given it sounds to me like they are spread all over the country with relatives.  That means they may be in no danger, or at least no more danger than anyone is that cesspool of violence is facing.

I think this is a lot of hysteria about what may be no problem.  I grant it might be.  It is possible that they will be used as hostages or the targets of political murder.  It is hard to tell at this point.  It is also a bit late to say, “What were they thinking?”  There biggest sin is that they believed what the Biden administration was telling them about conditions in Afghanistan.

In any event I don’t think this is any reason to be sending in the troops.  These may be American citizens because they were born here after their parents arrived or they may have actually been born in Afghanistan.  Either way I doubt if their hearts are in America and their values are rooted in the Constitution.  I wish for them the same safety I would wish for any other human being.

Opus 2021-211: On the Street: An Ostrich Breakfast

I went down to get coffee and check out the breakfast at the hotel.  Since it was an hour after the breakfast bar opened, I did not know what to expect.  The one thing I did not expect was nothing but coffee.  It seems they were not ready.  Being the introvert that I am, I switched my inner extrovert button and engaged in a conversation with a lady who was also getting coffee.

“They can’t get any help,” She said.  I replied, “It is that way all across the country.”  At this point I made the mistake of assuming I was talking to an intellegent patriotic American.  I said, “Why should people come to work when they are getting paid so much to stay home.”

I make that assumption a lot.  In Texas I am often rewarded.  In Virginia I was corrected.  She tried to educate me, “They need to open the border so they can find some people to take these jobs Americans won’t take.”  I pointed out how much people could make by staying at home.  She was having none of it.

I decided not to point out that the border was already open.  I didn’t remind her that Americans were working these jobs before the Covid police and the Proregressives* who want to make everyone dependent on the government had their way.  She was free, white and 21 so there was little I could tell her.  I also assume that she was a Democrat, wealthy, living in a gated community and knew no one who had voted for Trump.  She was probably upset because she could not find a maid or a gardener.

We need to understand that the country is overrun, not only by illegal aliens but by the Ostrich Party who loves the feel of sand in their nostrils and believe that if they can’t see the lion stalking them he will go on to someone else.  While an ostrich may not actually hide their head in the sand the same cannot be said for the elites.

Now that is a dish that does not go well with coffee.

Opus 2019-196: The Danger of Open Borders

In the back of my mind is a quotation, “Turn about is fair play.”  Another version of this is “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”.  A perversion of the golden rule would be “Do unto others as they have done unto you”.  Let’s suspend our awareness of such things as turning the other cheek and following the high road for a moment.

My suggestion today is to accept the wishes of the Mexican government with the understanding that it works both ways.  This from Who Are We,
“Homeland governments encourage their people to leave their country and facilitate their doing so.  Immediately after his election, Vicente Fox announced his long-term goal of an open border with the free movement of people between Mexico and the United States.” page 280
Okay.  Let’s give them what they want.  Let’s have free movement across borders and all of the implications that Fox has no trouble with north of the old border.  I am thinking that it would not take all that long for Americans to sniff the wind and smell opportunity.

Mexico is a country rich in natural resources with a large population of potential workers.  The things that have held them back have been a class oriented government and a culture that likes to take a nap in the afternoon.  If turned loose under the same lack of restraints northern bound Mexicans have, just think of all the wealth waiting to be realized by southern bound Yankees.  It would be a repeat of the 1840's when Americans moved into California, started loaning money to the large land owners and marrying their daughters.  Before you knew it they owned the state.

And if we allow the free markets to be free, think of the potential customers waiting to spend the new found wealth from all those jobs.  It reminds me of two shoe salesmen sent to a country where no one wore shoes.  One said it was a hopeless task because everyone went barefoot.  The next demanded a huge shipment and more help because everyone needed shoes.

It would take some time to adjust but I think the American dream can be transferred and free enterprise can cause a revolution socially and politically.  And keep in mind that when the cartels started telling the Americans what to do we would pay the same attention to the gun laws that they do.  In time we would see the Americanization of what used to be Mexico.

Who knows, it might be that Mexico becomes Americanized rather than the United States becoming part of Mexico.

Opus 2019-195: Bigger than a Border

Immigration is a problem.  I don’t think most people realize how big a problem.  Our focus on immigration is being sidetracked by illegal Mexicans sneaking across our southern border.  It is much bigger than that.  Consider this,
“Beginning in the 1960's, some 25,000 Indian ‘top graduates’ in engineering and related fields left for the United States, where many became extremely successful, among other things, running ‘more than 750 technology companies in California’s Silicone Valley alone.’  They have responded positively to the Indian government’s urging them to invest in education programs, training institutes, and productive facilities in India.” page 284
We not only need to build a wall on the southern border but possibly walls around the airports.  I have heard a lot of concern about the H-1B.  It sounds like a virus instead of a visa but if my memory serves me correctly it is for people who have skills that are needed but in short supply.  I heard about it because the techies I was around were complaining because people were being brought in from India to fill jobs they wanted and the people from India were willing to work for much less.  It was a high tech way of getting cheap labor.

It was also a way to undermine the advantages of the United States.  India has made a focused appeal to keep people loyal to their home country.  They were encouraged to look at themselves as agents of India who were going to take as much as they could from this country and transfer it home.  It isn’t only the Mexicans who are sending billions back to momma.  It is common in the Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino and others.

It has long been a policy for countries to try for a brain drain from others.  The idea was originally that the stronger nation would invite the brightest and best to come and study.  They would offer a superior education.  The hope was that once here the students would end up staying and enriching the host nation.  Now it seems to be working the other way.

We need to tighten up on the visas that undermine American workers.  We need to examine the role of foreign nationals who have no allegiance to the United States and are in positions to undermine our security.  The hard part will be balancing freedom with responsible policies that are open and fair to all involved.

Keep in mind, it is more than just a leaky southern border.  It also effects high tech.

Opus 2019-181: Plow vs Crown: “How You Gonna Keep Them Down on the Farm?”, part 2 of 2

The new United States rejected the European model.  They were aware they were doing it.  They wanted a place where people could follow their dreams and live up to their potential without requiring permission from the king and his minions.  They did away with hereditary privilege.  That leaves not place for an anointed class with built in wisdom.  The Progressives under any name be it Democrat, Republican, Socialist, Communist, Liberal, to name a few, want their power back.  They are jealous of their ancestors.

To do that they have to destroy the American dream and replace it with the historic class structure of the rest of the world.  People need to know their place and the instruments of power need to be reserved for those in the ruling class.  Massive immigration is part of the plan.  They need to flood the country with enough people that they do not assimilate.  They don’t want the new people to become Americans.  They want them to be enclaves they can control.

In Who Are We? Samuel Huntington quotes Nathan Glazer and Daniel Moynihan about assimilation.
“‘To what does one assimilate in modern America?’  In 1900 the answer was clear:  assimilation meant Americanization.  In 2000 the answers were complicated, contradictory, and ambiguous.  Many elite Americans were no longer confident of the virtue of their mainstream culture and instead preached a doctrine of diversity and equal validity of all cultures in America.” p. 199
The Average American believes that this country is the best place to live.  They believe that historically the American dream is unique.  This country has brought security and prosperity to the masses.  Again the Declaration of Independence talks about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.  The Elite does not like that because a happy, secure, prosperous America does not need them.  We threaten them because if large numbers of people are successful they will undermine the elite’s power and threaten their control.

Thus they must bring us down.  It is what is going on when we see a common American, Michael Flynn going to trial and an admitted criminal, Hillary Clinton, still on the speaking circuit.

Will we pull out of the nose dive?  Is it too late?  The Anointed that control education, media and bureaucratic government are working to replace the American Dream with something we might call “The Divine Right of the Elite.”  It took hundreds of years for common people to get a solid victory.  The battle is still going on.  It will continue even is America falls.  It will resurrect itself every time a peasant looks at the stars and says, “This isn’t right!”

As we often paraphrase Pogo, “We have met the Civil War, and it is us.”

Opus 2018-259: Cui Bono

Who benefits from illegal aliens invading our country?  It is a question that is often ignored or presented as a partisan issue.  It is not a chasm populated by Republicans on one side and Democrats on the other.  The list is long and ubiquitous.

The countries sending them want easy access.  This is nothing new.  We act like dumping your problem people is a new phenomenon.  Not so.  Oliver Cromwell sent large numbers of rebellious Scots and Irish as indentured servants.  Georgia was established as a penal colony.  Even the slaves that were sold by Africans to European and Muslim slave dealers were the ones that the locals wanted to get rid of.

The people who come want easy crossings.  Whether they are fleeing oppression, looking for a better job or terrorists wanting to destroy us, they have one thing in common.  Abolish ICE.  Neuter the border patrol.  Create more sanctuary cities.  A large part of the world would love to move to Southern California if they could just get across the ocean.

People who want cheap labor are in favor of a porous border.  It isn’t just the rich businessmen who run sweat shops.  The desire for cheap labor extends everywhere.  People who want cheap labor to mow their lawn are in favor of open borders.  People who want restaurant prices to stay down don’t mind cheap labor.  I was struck by a recent headline sparked by an illegal who murdered a college girl.  The reporters suddenly became aware of farms in the area who depended on illegals to work for low wages.

The Democrat Party believes they are gaining a whole new voter base.  They don’t even care if the voters are citizens.  They will register them and have them voting the rest of their lives.  In many case they will keep them voting for years after they die.  Their problem is that the country is so awesome that many of them start doing well, gaining wealth and realizing that the Democrats want to take that away from them.

Who then is hurt by illegal aliens.  The biggest hit is taken by the everyday tax payer.  They are the ones who fund the schools, government medical programs, food subsidies and rent payments.  The money comes from some where and many of the illegals are either in the cash economy or working under assumed identities so they make reduced contributions, if any.

You also have the victims of crime.  We hear the statistics again and again.  Currently the headlines are repetitious about illegal aliens committing murder, rape and robbery.  Our jails are full of the ones who have been caught and convicted.  Many people live in fear even within their homes.

Do we need to do something about illegal aliens?  Yes we do.  Will we?  Probably not.

Opus 2018-241: Kalifornia Is Nice This Time of Year

There is no real need for the uncomfortable celebrities to go to Canada.  Such a download could become a potential cause of conflict and force Canada to build a wall.  We don’t need that when there are ready alternatives withing the lower 48.  Just as I fled the People’s Republik I would encourage the disenchanted to flee the free states.  For those west of the Mississippi I would suggest Kaliforny is the place they ought to be and like the Clampetts they can head to Beverly...Hills, that is.

For those east of the Mississippi I would suggest the People’s Republic of Massachusetts.

The problem is that they look at how bad things are in those socialist paradises and opt for Texas.  In their rhetoric they hate everything Texas stands for but in their hearts they know it and other states that believe in freedom are the only places where they will be allowed to continue to be so wrong.  In Texas there are still enough people who are working toward a bright future that the liberals can be carried while they protest.

Perhaps we could propose a tax incentive for people moving to blue states.  We could use the money to extend the wall along the border of California.

I am only 1% joking.

Opus 2018-177: New Laws: Open Wide

I don’t know if you have seen the meme about open borders and open doors.  The idea is that if you are in favor of open borders you should never close or lock your front door.  It should be open to show how you welcome the entire world into your life.  I used this illustration for years when I was teaching and immigration came up.  I am glad to see it making the net.

My suggestion is that we need a government agency and federal program to keep track of all people who are in favor of open borders.  We would then have a team of agents visit their homes when they are not looking and remove all locks from their doors.  They should also determine if there are any safes and jam them so they will not close.  (Obviously this will not cause gun safes to be left open because these people also are against guns).  With enough care you could also find out all their passwords and account numbers so that they would really be open in their lives.  The team would do the same for their cars and RV’s.  Finally they would remove all fences and security systems.

We need to let the law of unintended consequences introduce these unicorn riders to the laws of cause and effect.  Physics and human nature will still operate no matter how much they deny it.

Opus 2017-326: On the Street: Illegal Economics

Certain groups are in favor of open borders.  They make strange bedfellows.

You have the liberal democrats and the RINO businessmen.  You would think they are in opposition yet both want lots of illegal immigration.  The reasons are similar.  The Democrats want cheap votes.  The businessmen want cheap labor.  They are both willing to destroy our republic.

There is another reason that employers and business owners often like open boarders.  It isn’t just cheap labor.  It is also the existence of the cash economy.  If you can hire someone and pay them cash you are ahead.  You don’t have to pay a bookkeeper and pay all the extra expenses of insurance and taxes.

About two years ago our neighbor was having some remodeling done.  I talked to her contractor over the fence for a few minutes.  I learned a lot.

He was able to work cheaper because of the cash economy.  He was an American born Latino.  He spoke well and drove a really nice truck.  He was able to do this and charge lower prices because most of what he did was below the radar.  Yes, he started with employing illegals.  He also paid in cash and was paid in cash.  This combination allowed him to save thousands of dollars.  He charged less and made more.

Think about the expenses that are dumped on legal operators.  Next time you get a pay stub, look at all the items being withheld.  Notice how many are matched by the employer.  All of it has to be passed on to the person buying what you make or sell.  In addition your employer must pay accountants and bookkeepers to make sure the numbers work.  Then you have business licenses, construction permits, insurance and so forth.  The list goes on.

Illegals work for less.  They are often afraid to complain about abuse.  If you are really sneaky you can pick up day laborers, have them work all day and not show up to give them a ride home or pay them.

And you wonder why you can’t get a raise.

Opus 2017-322: On the Street: Self Deportation

What is happening with immigration?  Whatever it is, it is touching people in their every day lives.  We had a man doing some painting at our house.  He was an American born man of Mexican extraction.  I did not ask him if he spoke Spanish.  He was having a hard time keeping up with the work demand.  He blamed it on the deportations ordered by President Trump.  I pointed out that the only ones being arrested and deported were those with criminal histories.  He agreed.  He also agreed that people are going back to Mexico because of fear of deportation.  It seems all we need to do is get people to believe we will enforce existing law.  Meanwhile, all the people he used to hire are leaving.

I talked about the situation with our general contractor.  He said he tried not to hire illegals but claimed he sometimes had no choice.  When I pressed him on it he admitted that the problem was not a lack of Americans willing to do the job but finding Americans willing to work for what he wanted to pay.  That highlights why so many in business are for open borders:  Cheap labor.  If the Latino population that came legally would just pay attention they would realize that the threat posed by illegal immigration is also aimed at their jobs.  A hungry guy on the street corner will be willing to work for less than someone who has a mortgage.

If we can reduce the number of illegals working there will be two results.  First, it will provide more jobs for American citizens.  Second, it will raise wages.  In reality I can afford to pay a little more for a painter or to have my oil changed.  I might need to eat at home a little more often but it would improve the lives across the board.

Build the wall.  Enforce the law.  Arrest the criminals.  Cut off the benefits.  Watch the rest self deport.  It will work.

I would suggest that one way in which we could stop separating families is by keeping part of the family from coming into the country in the first place.  That way they could not only be together with their mommies an daddies but also with their cousins, uncles, bros and homies.

It is a solution that would seem to make us all happy.

Opus 2017-232: Headlines: A Dream Gone Bust

When we talk about illegal immigration we have a lot of different pictures in our head.  Some are genuine, others are hysteria.  A Drudge link taking us to My San Antonio reveals an ugly picture that is all too real.  An 18 wheeler was parked in a Walmart parking lot, which is not unusual.  What was unusual was that it was full of illegal immigrants being smuggled into the country.  At some point the air conditioning in the trailer was turned off and the truck abandoned with people still inside.  As a result we now have eight dead and many more in the hospital.

Welcome to a lack of border security.  The article gives other examples of the same type of thing.  Sometimes the people are locked in the trailers.  In this case that does not seem to have happened but eight died in spite of being one door away from the outside.  We know this because the tragedy was discovered when one person asked a Walmart employee for water which would not have happened it the trailer was locked.

I hope that the people responsible are arrested, convicted and locked away for a long time.  That is a group that includes the border staff that was either lazy or bribed, the driver who left them to die and the people driving cars that had already collected people from the truck.  If trucks were documented as well as immigrants, this would not have happened.

Leaking borders kill people in unexpected ways.

Opus 2017-158: Digging into Deuteronomy: Immigrants

(Deuteronomy 1:16 NAS77)  "Then I charged your judges at that time, saying, 'Hear the cases between your fellow countrymen, and judge righteously between a man and his fellow countryman, or the alien who is with him.

Immigration is a big issue today in the United States.  It has been an issue from the beginning of our history.  As should be expected the Bible has something to say about it.  The legal structure of Israel made allowance for dealing with the “alien” (1616).  This is the first reference to non-Jews in Deuteronomy.  There are more.  I have noticed three issues.

First is the concept of justice even for foreigners.
(Deuteronomy 24:14 NAS77)  "You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your countrymen or one of your aliens who is in your land in your towns.

(Deuteronomy 24:17 NAS77)  "You shall not pervert the justice due an alien or an orphan, nor take a widow's garment in pledge.

(Deuteronomy 27:19 NAS77)  'Cursed is he who distorts the justice due an alien, orphan, and widow.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
I remind you that the Biblical idea of justice has nothing to do with the modern mantra involving “social justice”.  That is just a way of pushing a left wing agenda.  Real justice is based on unchanging truth and values.  Real justice does not change based on who is in power.  Write that down and underline it if you need to.

The Bible says that even the alien is to receive justice.

A second principle for aliens is that they were also expected to celebrate the Sabbath.
(Deuteronomy 5:14 NAS77)  but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.
The day of rest was a principle established by God for all of creation.  It did not just apply to an in crowd or ruling party

All of this being said, the third principle is that foreigners are not always held to the same standard of Jews.
(Deuteronomy 14:21 KJV)  Ye shall not eat of any thing that dieth of itself: thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is in thy gates, that he may eat it; or thou mayest sell it unto an alien: for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.
God did not expect the non-Jew to follow the same dietary laws as His people.  Food that would be rejected for a Hebrew was okay for a gentile.  This is a focused verse but it shows you the principle.

These are principles that should be taken into consideration as we think about the aliens in our midst.
