I am in the early stages of a long term project of reading through the Hadith. The Hadiths are one of the holy books of Islam. They are much longer than the Koran and thus people are less familiar with them. As I begin my journey I am surprised at what I find. I wonder what percentage of Muslims ever read their holy books.
In a sense it is not a fair question. Why just single out Muslims? How many Christians actually read their Bible? From experience and conversation the number is low. Of course that brings up the question of whether you can really be a Christian is you don’t read God’s word. Since I am asking I would wonder about Islam the same way. Or Buddhism. The few people I know who claim to be Buddhist seem to know less about it than I do. I am guessing this is common across the board.
If you claim to have a faith I encourage you to get serious about reading the holy books of your religion. You may find that they do not reflect who you are or whom you want to be. If your religion is Communism then I urge you to read the Communist Manifesto. If you are a rational human being with basic decent values you may be shocked at what you find.
Read while you can. Make sure you are on the team you signed up for.

This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.
Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.
