One of the ads that popped up on my You Tube feed had this line,
“He gave his life as a martyr for the cause of peace.”I think it was advertising some kind of computer game you could play on line. What struck me was the attempt to draw parallels with the life of Christ. We saw this theme developing in Star Wars. We see it being stolen all the time.
In reality, this is a phrase that could sum up the contribution of every soldier that we celebrate on Memorial Day. Most modern soldiers do not go to war because they want to rape, pillage and steal. Most modern soldiers go to war because they feel they are defending their family in their country. The purpose of having a strong military is really to keep people from invading and taking over your space.
Many people also live their lives in a self sacrificing way. They are committed to the idea of helping the downtrodden and trying to advance godly principles in our society. Often they set aside earlier dreams of wealth and fame. Instead, they settle for a life of purpose and contribution.
If you know someone like that, salute them. You might even take them out to dinner at a place that they would never go themselves.
