Opus 2026-017: How Do You Spell That?

One of the bits of superstitious nonsense that we pick up reading fantasy novels is how knowing someone’s name gives you control over them.  I don’t know if this belief is common in pagan cultures or not.  Books I’ve read act like it is, but you know how books are dependable.  I do believe, though, that there is something in the world with the occult, which says that knowing someone’s true name gives you magical powers over them.  I would suggest that that’s a bit of nonsense.

Why would I say that?

I would say that because God has told us His name, Yahweh.  He came right out and said it to Moses.  That is His name.  Does that give us some kind of mystical control over manipulating Him?

I would suggest that there are many people that think they have the ability to control God.  They think of Him as a big vending machine.  We know a lot of them who have casual contact with our church.  They’re always calling in with prayer requests as if we had some magic wand we could wave and that suddenly the God that they reject would look at them with benevolent smiles.  I don’t think it works that way.

You also find theologians that tend to think this way, even if they don’t recognize it.  I don’t know how many times people tell me that God can’t do something.  Now I am not talking about the atheistic dreamers who come up with things like, “Could God make a rock so big that he couldn’t move it?”  That is nonsense logic and is mutually exclusive.  I’m talking about people who will say that because God is sovereign that we cannot have free will.  We love to twist our theology and force it down God’s Throat.

So no, I would reject this common bit of superstition.  We don’t have a public name and a secret name.  God told us His name and that should settle the issue.

Of course that doesn’t cover how you should carefully hide your fingernails so they can’t be used in potions against you.

Opus 2024-259: Barriers to Survival

When I look at the state of the country and wonder if we are going to live through all of this there are three things that I am concerned about.

The first is the utter determination of the elites to either win or destroy the country.  Actually, I think their purpose is to destroy the country and there is nothing they will not do to drag it down.  They consider winning the end of American excellence.  They hate western culture.  They hate Christianity.  They even hate people.  They hate liberty.  They will sit and cackle over the flames as they burn the culture down.

Second is the large number of people who seem totally ignorant of what’s going on.  They don’t see, they don’t hear, and they certainly won’t talk about it.  I really can’t understand how people don’t see the danger of declaring anything you disagree with as hate speech and making it a category to be persecuted.

The third group would be those who see, and understand, but don’t care about it.  They figure they will be above it.  They figure won’t touch them.  They don’t have any strong convictions that are at risk.  We have a growing group of self-centered, narcissistic individuals, who think that they are about all of this.  So why get excited?

Will there be enough of us who believe in the rule of law, genuine justice based on that law being equally applied and unchanging truth involving moral issues?  I will continue to look for places to speak up and make a difference.  Maybe if enough join in the republic will revive.

The time to get serious about prayer is now not when the storm troopers from the alphabet agencies show up at your door or your child comes home from college with pink hair and tattoos.

Opus 2023-195: A Nefarious Review

I don’t know if you have seen the movie “Nefarious”.  It was well done and stimulates the mental synapses.  Biblically and theologically it had a lot of rough edges and holes but it gives insight into what is happening in our country and what the two sides are like.

If I were a demon trying to bring down the United States I would stage a demon possession that would look just like what we have in president Biden:  An empty suit with a past that deserves possession, often himself but with key moments of announcements and signings where he is taken over to advance the agenda.  It would explain a man who can on occasion actually complete a sentence and other times just wanders around looking for Jill.

Reversed, it might be like the filling of the Spirit in the OT.  There you had the Spirit bestowed only on selected individuals and for a period of time.  Saul is a good example.  That changed at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit became available to all believers.

We are in a spiritual battle in this country and we are finding out what would happen if they had a war and nobody showed up.  The one side that came late has the whole field to themselves.

I am not worried about the type of encounter in Nefarious.  Why would the devil waste his time manipiulating people who are already doing his will?  Believers don’t need to worry about demon possession as much as the drunk coming toward us at night.  Remember,

Opus 2018-250: Curses

I can’t find where I first saw it mentioned but you my have read about the witches coming together to throw a curse on Justice Brett Kavanaugh.  It is supposed to be focused on his mistreatment of women.  I imagine they are basing it all on a vague, unsupported accusation that he got too pushy once when he was a teenager.  I have good news for the new justice from the book of Proverbs.

(Proverbs 26:2 NAS77)  Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, So a curse without cause does not alight.

I don’t think political assassinations or publicity stunts qualify as a reason for a curse.

What is interesting to me is that it doesn’t say that curses don’t exist, just that they are worthless if not deserved.

Maybe someone has cursed all the media outlets that report fake news.  Their circulation has certainly take a nose dive.

Opus 2011-277, Bewitched by I Love Lucy

Every once in awhile I read some comments that show concern for the growth of the occult in our society.  People trace it back to the Ouija board parlor game and such TV shows as “Bewitched.”  Some even get heretical enough to question The Chronicles of Narnia or The Lord of the Rings.

I see the issue.  I agree we have a problem.  I have a question though.  Which witch was worse, Samantha or Lucy?  Samantha introduced witches into our homes.  She was an attractive, sensitive, well meaning wife and mother.  What is not to like?  All witches can’t be like her mother, can they?  We need to give witches a chance, right?

I have a bigger problem with the sitcom, “I Love Lucy.”  The full disclosure is that I don’t like slap-stick comedy.  I am more into George Burns the Lucy.  I like Bill Cosby more than the Three Stooges.  I will take the dry one-liners.  You can have the pie in the face.

Having said that there is still a problem.  Lucy and programs like it made a joke out of sin, poor character and bad choices.  Every week Lucy would lie, cheat or steal.  Then would come more lies to cover it up.  Eventually Ricky would catch on and confront her.  We would have a pseudo-repentance and Ricky of course would forgive.  Next week, more of the same.  We learned that sin was funny and that God, played by Ricky, was really pretty easy to fool.

One desensitized to the occult.  One desensitized to sin.  In the eyes of God, both are major issues. 

Take care with what you feed your mind and soul.
