Somewhere in the past month or two I wrote about how I don’t give to political candidates because they keep taking the money I give and using it to try and get more money from me instead of financing the campaign. That’s very discouraging and takes away any motivation to send money.
We are currently in a big race in Texas. Ken Paxton, who seems to be fairly solid, is running against a total basket case. Of course I realize that the term “basket case” could refer to just about any Democrat candidate but in this case it’s a big basket. I think what I wrote about recently was how the big PACs were sending Paxton money now. I thought of trying to give a contribution, but then I ran into the wall of getting it used to solicit more.
We have all these laws in place that are theoretically designed to cut back on the influence of the wealthy and the inner circles. When I was volunteering at Republican headquarters a couple years ago, it didn’t matter how little money you wanted to put in, they needed your name and address and vital information. Needless to say that slowed some down.
All these rules and regulations, however, have not slowed the Soros money down. They have not stopped anybody with $1 billion who wants to set up a political action committee from donating large amounts of money. In essence what has happened in order to try and clean up the process, we have made it even more dirty. The rich people who want to influence the election have lawyers and lobbyist and experts to show them how to find the back door and get around the intent of the law. The ordinary folks, we don’t have any such.
It’s another case where anything the government tries to regulate and getting control of they end up making worse. If I ever were foolish enough to run for office, my main campaign promise would be to vote “no” on every spending bill, tax increase, or regulation that came down the pike.
It might be enough to get me elected.

Welcome to Varied Expressions of Worship
This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.
Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.
