Opus 2026-384: Bring Back Anarchy

Anarchy gets a lot of bad press if anybody ever bothers to think about it.  Usually it’s associated with spies running around with those cannonball type bombs and a fuse running out the top.  In reality anarchy is not the destruction of established government but a government that is not centralized at all.

God’s original plan seemed to be a type of anarchy.  In the book of the Judges there was no king.  There was no ruling power.  There was no central authority.  I would even take that far enough to say that in the spiritual realm, there was no central authority.  I did a study, I need to check again, but the law is not mentioned in Judges at all.  I can’t think of any reference to priest or Levi’s.  Obviously, there was no king.  The big turning point comes when the people are demanding a king and God gives in and consents to that.  He warns them about it.  They don’t listen.  They want a king.

Thus central governments are not in God’s original plan.

I’ve heard a lot about how they were able to live in this chaos because there were no major empires trying to conquer them.  I’m not sure that’s an accurate statement.  Egypt was an empire. I’m pretty sure that Mesopotamia had empires.  The Levant had empires.  The sea people were doing their thing.  I need to check on this, but I think there were plenty of empires that could’ve had their eye on Israel and yet God kept raising up judges to push them back.  Is that a model for us today?

Jesus established the church.  We look at Pentecost as the beginning.  And while it’s true that He said he would build His church on Peter most non-Catholics consider that to be the proclamation that Jesus was the Christ, not an organized religion.  Jesus did not leave a hierarchy.  That was established by Paul up to a point.  Paul appointed elders, bishops, deacons to preside in the churches.  He didn’t give them the authority that came later, so I’m not sure we can say that Paul established the hierarchy of the church as we have it today.  It’s very possible that the church was originally intended to be like the book of Judges, and not like the reign of David.

Perhaps we need to return to the days of judges where each family was responsible to God, for what happened in their sphere. Perhaps God needs to raise up a new judge to bring his people together to focus on the invading enemies.
