Opus 2026-351: Intellectual Spectrum

The Bible gives us an outstanding spectrum of intellectual challenges and rewards.

At one end, you have the very solid foundation given to us by the attributes of God.  He is dependable and, in the sense of His attributes, unchanging.  That means that we can investigate the world around us, not to question God’s authority, but to try to understand how He put it together and how it works.  This is the basis of all scientific inquiry.

At the other hand, we have the mysterious realms of the impossible.  Let’s face it.  We cannot even begin to understand the meaning of infinity, let alone the awesome reality of an eternal God.   Recently, I had a discussion with a friend about what the Bible teaches about heaven.  We pretty much started out agreeing that it doesn’t really say much in describing what it will be like.  At the same time we agreed that it was glorious beyond our comprehension.  What little we did have was just a courtesy call by God to give us something to hang onto.  We rejoiced as we speculated.

In between you’ve got the gradual morphing of certainty chemistry.  If you build on that which provides a solid foundation you can make progress.  If you start to speculate based on your own assumptions and theories the edifice gets wobbly and crashes.  This is what we see happening in much of scientific “progress”.  

That is one of the glorious things about the word of God and following Jesus Christ.  You may not know the details of your goal or exactly where the path leads, but you can be sure of the rock beneath your feet.
