What? We need experts and programs in order to read our Bibles? This mystifies me.
We had a lady share in our service a few months ago about how she had gotten serious about reading her Bible. Yay her. It’s an exciting step forward. As she shared her experience, it became clear that she was not just reading her Bible, but was following someone else’s program for reading her Bible. Again, it was a good thing and I think the goal was to get through the Bible every year.
Recently someone else was talking about how much they were enjoy reading their Bible. Yay her. Then she went on and talked about how she didn’t listen to the teaching until after she read it. Evidently she was supposed to listen before she read, but she, being rebellious, did it afterwards. Again, I’m glad they’re reading their Bibles, but I keep wondering just why it is that we need people to tell us how to read our Bible.
My wife is also into some kind of Bible reading program. It has her jumping around from place to place and occasionally she asks me why. I really can’t tell her. It probably gives an explanation somewhere in the fine print, but she is relying on someone else to guide her reading instead of just plunging in and letting the Holy Spirit speak to her. That is supposed to be how it works. It usually works that way for me.
That sounds a bit arrogant on my part.

This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.
Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.

It’s not arrogant at all. I’m always reading commentaries and other “extra-curricular” works, but I’m always filtering everything through God’s Word. Sometimes I can glean something really special. But God’s Word comes first.
ReplyDeleteYes. That is so important because we don't know how to filter and interpret unless we are grounded first. As I get older it amazes me how many books I don't finish or presentations I stop listening to because they wander off base.
