I recently had the opportunity to preach for five weeks at another church. It was a rewarding experience because my study is much more focused when I have to stand in a pulpit and say, “Thus saith the Lord.” I was also expected to do a children’s sermon. Since children are much more visual and literal I had to look for gimmicks to get my point across.
One week I decided I would use chocolate chip cookies.
The first issue was that I had never baked chocolate chip cookies before and if my application was to have any meaning I had to do it from scratch. I took a package of Tollhouse Morsels out of the freezer and did what is foreign to so many people. I read the instructions. I had everything I needed in the house. The directions were very clear. I followed them.
That was my point. When you have a challenge you need to follow directions. For cookies it was the package. For Christians it is the Bible. Follow the directions and things will work out.
Everyone raved over my cookies. How can you mess up chocolate chip cookies? I found out a few weeks later when another gentleman shared his experience. He said they didn’t come out quite right. I asked him if he read the directions. He said yes, so I pushed a little harder. I asked if he followed the direction. He got a little sheepish and admitted he had not.
It is amazing how much better things work out in life when you follow the directions. I hope the kids got that point.
