If I had to sumarize most of the sermons we hear it would be something to the effect of “Turn or burn.” Some people focus on the burning and wonder how God could allow hell. I think the more inportant focus should be on turning. Never underestimate the importance of repentance. As I read this verse in the KJV I enjoyed the common language of the set up.Choose to not need to tremble.Acts 17:30 (KJV) And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:God has had times when He “winked” at our ignorance. There are times when the ignorance is genuine. You may have been raised in a bubble. You may not be old enough to read the adult content of this blog. You may be a lot of things that God is willing to let slide. That does not take away from the point of this verse.
Literal or figurative, that is not really the question. The question is not what it says, but what it means. Sometimes that’s literal. Sometimes it’s figurative. I’m thinking about this in relation to the several quotes about Abraham believing, and it being counted as righteousness. It means what you say it does. It means much more.
Believing is key. There is no substitute. It also does not cancel out the necessity of repentance. The word means to turn. It means to change direction. If you are not willing to do that then your believing gets put into the same category as the demons.(Jas 2:19 KJV) Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
