One of the strategies of education is called Inquiry. It simply means asking questions and getting students to ask questions that they are willing to research. The students can really get into it because they know it gives them a chance to get the class off track.
What teacher has not had their hopes awakened by a student raising a hand and saying, “I have a question.” One I get often is “What size shoe do you wear?” Another is “When is this class over?” When we are in the middle of an important issue the question is usually, “Can I go to the bathroom?”
I don’t get excited when they tell me they have a question. I simply tell them, “I have an answer.”
That has become one of my standard replies. Sometimes I have to remind them that “I don’t know” is an answer.
