Welcome to Varied Expressions of Worship

This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.

Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.

Opus 2019-105: Election 2020: Unintended Consequences

One of the principles we observe on a regular basis is the law of unintended consequences.  This is where a program is implemented that has a goal and even if the stated goal is reached there are a lot of results that no one factored in.  One example is the solar power array on the highway leading from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.  You see it for miles and don’t dare look directly at it.  It is that bright.  All in all it is a very impressive achievement and I am sure it produces a lot of electricity.  What no one told us about and still attempt to censor is the number of birds that are killed by the intense heat generated above the mirrors.  That was an unintended consequence.  Although they are sometimes pleasant surprises we usually find that the unexpected is negative.
This is to be expected in human planning.  In a perfect world the negative would be compared to the positive and adjustments might be made.  We just keep on barreling down the road.

God has no such limitations.  That is why I am often considering following the kosher laws laid down by the Old Testament although I am not Jewish and don’t have any obligation to follow them.  It seems to me that God had a reason for each of them and as science advances we often stumble across what was behind them.  With God there are no unintended consequences.

How does God bring about the results He wants?  He actually does not need to do a lot of spectacular miracles.  He can change the weather with a million little tweaks that no one else would notice.  When you add them up you see a hurricane dissipate or a plague die out.  Just because you don’t see Him working doesn’t mean that the drunk that was going to wipe out your family doesn’t have a flat tire or sneeze and run into a tree.

Meanwhile be looking at electing people who are willing to consider the facts and change their mind if things are not working out the way they were intended.  I can think of lots of laws that need to be repealed and programs that need to be canceled.  We need to get the message to the government.

Elections matter.  For many of us the Election of Donald Trump was a massive unintended consequence.  Then came 2018 and too many people read the news and ignored the truth.  We will get another chance at the House in two years.  2020 is coming.

  1. I've read that the Jews were the healthiest people in the world until WW II when following kosher rules was virtually impossible for several years. Most never went back and they are no longer the healthy folks they used to be.

    1. It also goes along with the rise of the secular Jew.

Comments are welcome. Feel free to agree or disagree but keep it clean, courteous and short. I heard some shorthand on a podcast: TLDR, Too long, didn't read.
