Welcome to Varied Expressions of Worship

This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.

Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.

Opus 2018-131: Stroke Thoughts, Part 2 of 3, Be Afraid

If you believe in evolution then you need to be prepared for the end of the world.  Everything could fall apart very quickly.

Let’s take a look at your favorite cold beverage.  The chances are you have ice cubes in the container.  You will notice that they are floating at the top.  Did you ever stop to think about that?  Do you remember the scientific explanation?  You are observing something that defies the general rule of physics that says things expand when they are heated and contract when they are cooled.  Most people know that.  There may be other exceptions but an important one is water.  Ice floats because when it crosses the threshold and and gets cold enough to change phases, i.e. goes from a liquid to a solid, instead of contracting it expands slightly.  That means that its mass becomes less than the water around it and it rises.  Simple science.  Understood physics.

What if, by random chance, that law of nature decides it is bored and wants to change its behavior?  Ice stops floating.  It contracts like it is supposed to do.  It accumulates at the bottom of the ocean, far from the heat of the sun, and never melts.  The next layer of ice forms and sinks.  Soon you have the oceans frozen over and life as we know it is impossible.  I have no idea how this would effect the rest of the universe.  That would be enough.  So if you believe in evolution and random chance, be afraid.  Be very afraid.  Tonight, while you are sleeping could be the moment.

And keep an eye on the ice in your glass.

What about diffusion?  If I remember my high school science, diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of greater density to an area of lesser density.  It is how our lungs work with oxygen and carbon dioxide.  It is how you smell the roast burning in the oven when you are in the living room.  It is a common event.  It is regulated by a lot of laws of physics that I would not even know how to look up.  What if tonight while you were asleep the laws of physics were tweaked and the oxygen and carbon dioxide stopped moving back and forth?  Or what if it only slowed down 50%?  If you believe that life is a series of accidents then you have no reason to believe that could not happen tonight, or before I stop writing.

Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

To be continued...

Comments are welcome. Feel free to agree or disagree but keep it clean, courteous and short. I heard some shorthand on a podcast: TLDR, Too long, didn't read.
