How many times have we seen a last minute attack ad defeat a good candidate? I have not bothered to keep count.
One that stands out in my memory was the Senate campaign in California which had Bruce Herschensohn running against Barbara Boxer. He was doing very well until a day or two before the election a massive ad campaign accused him of some sordid behavior. There was no time for a rebuttal. He lost. We see this again and again.
The liars in the community invest their life in what I am calling the Sound Bite Slugs. These are the people who hear something, their mouth falls open, their brain turns to pudding and they start their knee jerk reaction to what they heard. Much later they will wake up but they may not even remember. At least they will deny that they were so gullible.
They each have the same number of votes I have, one. They outnumber me. It is why we need to stay with the Electoral College and away from the popular vote.
