How are you doing? How’s it goin’? What’s happening? We all hear this an usually give the standard replies. I will plead somewhat guilty to those lies. In reality an honest response would depend on the time of day.
Let’s say you greet me as I stumble toward the kitchen to turn on the coffee pot. You will be lucky if you get a grunt in reply. It is not my best time of day.
That changes over the next hour. As I begin my morning ritual of worship with praise and thanksgiving the discipline does two things. It reminds me of the attributes of God and His promises. It reminds me of my salvation. In the process I become sharply aware of how blessed I really am.
Then life tries to get me derailed. It works overtime. If I am not careful it will succeed. The battle slowly draws down my energy until by bed time if might be back to my pre-coffee grunt again.
So I constantly look for things to remind me of how blessed I am. Sunday I kept hearing about all the physical problems people have had. They were still joyful but of course it was still morning. In spite of that it reminds me that I have it much better than I deserve. I hear stories about people’s children and am reminded of how good I have it. They announce they are collecting for the food bank. We have half a page of prayer requests, in small print. All of this reminds me of how many curses God has kept me from.
Is the country falling apart? It looks like it. Has the church surrendered to paganism? It looks like it. Are there pot holes in the roads? It looks and feels like it. It all reminds me of how blessed I am.
Blessings on you too.
