I am really getting tired of hearing people say, “Scripture says....” I keep wanting to scream in their ear, “Where? Give me chapter and verse.” Usually they can’t. It is interesting how often people quote Benjamin Franklin and act like it is the Bible. We need to be careful in misquoting the Bible. I say that in spite of the fact that I believe that the Bible is the word of God.
The general pagan doesn’t care. Really. Why should a Buddhist, a Hindu or a Wican care what the Bible says about anything. If you believe it is just another old book it has no more authority than something written by Oprah or Dr. Phil. Actually it has less impact.
The cultural Christian doesn’t care. They might pay lip service to the Bible as a great book but it doesn’t go too far. Any part that limits their personal gratification gets set aside for some reason. It is amazing how many so-called Christians reject some of the central teachings of the Bible. The physical resurrection of Jesus which the Bible presents as the center of the faith is labeled a myth. Sexual purity is just a hang up that some of the frustrated men tried to force on us to keep us from having fun. The list goes on and the accommodations pile up.
The new Christian often doesn’t know any better. The problem here is that you can distract them from the truths that the Bible teaches by getting them focusing on deceptive points. It is crippling to their spiritual growth.
Anyone who actually reads their Bible might be a bit skeptical. One of the general principles I operate by is that if it sounds fishy then it will smell fishy if you get closer. I say that not to insult the fish but to remind myself that the Bible is a book of consistent truth from a God who does not change. I wish I could say the same for the people who like to throw out “quotes”.
If you are going to quote the Bible, get it correct and use it with people who will listen.

Welcome to Varied Expressions of Worship
This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.
Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.

Hello....I follow your blog every day and always enjoy what you write. :) I also follow "Ton Thoughts" and see that you often comment on his blog. I was wondering if you knew if Vincent's blog has been discontinued as I am unable to see it anymore since yesterday...Blogger gives a site for redirection but there's nothing there either. Hoping all is okay with Vincent....:)
ReplyDeleteYes, he is still alive and well. He is having some issues with Blogger. Hopefully he will get it worked out soon.
DeleteMaybe he can leave a note for you here. Are you there Vincent?

Hello Ms. Lynney!
DeleteAll is well, but my domain is not. I forgot to renew it so I am back to the dark ages of having blogspot in the URL address. It brings me great joy to know that you still read my blog everyday. To know that I am giving at least one other person than myself some form of entertainment or insight is why I have done this thing for years and plan to for many more to come.
Thank you for reaching out and making sure I was alright!
Thanks for letting me know all is fine with Vincent! I rarely comment on his blog but love reading it daily, and always enjoy reading your comments to him. Hopefully Blogger will start to behave for him soon! :)
