Opus 2025-589: Monday Pulpit: Caught My Attention

We shared in communion on Sunday.  Some of you may take it every day.  We do it every few months.  I am not sure of the schedule.  Since I am not in charge I don’t worry about it.  Communion is a special time of coming together.

The pastor said a couple of things that registered on my foggy mind.  The first was, “Coming to the altar should say something.  Not coming says nothing.”  His point is that we are making a statement of our faith when we come forward.  People might not come for many reasons that have nothing to do with their spiritual condition.  Communion is not a time to sift.  He makes this point each time we partake.

The second thing he said he may have said before but it hadn’t registered.  “The pastor does not examine you.   The church does not examine you.  You are to examine yourself.”  That is a good reminder of what Paul said to the church in I Corinthians 11.  Ultimately we are the ones who answer to God for our spiritual condition.  Examine.

Have a Merry Christmas.
