Recently, I heard the five Solas extolled.
Grace alone
Faith alone
Scripture alone
Christ alone
The glory of God alone.
I decided if someone would have set me down, stared me in the eye, have a club in their hand, and be ready to read me out of the church and had asked me, “Do you believe in these things?” that I would have to answer them, “To be honest yes, but I will have to be dishonest in your eyes and explaining what they mean.”
What I mean by that is I disagree with the typical rationale of theologians and denominational systems around the world. It means that I would have to take each one of them and define it in my way, so that it doesn’t violate scripture or reason.
Start off with just reason and logic. Salvation cannot be both by grace alone, and by faith alone. It’s kind of like saying things are based on the flat part of the circle. It just doesn’t work. And the same way if our salvation is found in Scripture alone, then how can it be found in Christ alone at the same time?
There are ways to explain this, if you get away from your simplistic little chants. Put together they don’t make any sense. Explained thoughtfully theywake up a comprehensive view of salvation.
Take the time to explain. Don’t fall into the trap, jargon and euphemisms.
