Psalms is full of praise for God. Israel had reason. They had been chosen out of the entire world to be God’s people. That is something to shout about.
There is great misunderstanding about that call. You have to ask yourself “Why?” We usually focus that question on what qualities attracted God’s attention. That is the wrong line of meditation. The real question should involved should be, “For what purpose was Israel called?” The emphasis is on called, not chosen.
Israel as a nation was called to touch the world for God. Ultimately they refused. They failed. They became preoccupied with how special they were and focused on the letter of the law instead of the spirit. God kept trying to get their attention but they did not listen.
Today we are called individually. We are not called because of our noble character. We are called to serve. It might be a good way to spend a quiet morning thinking about how God wants us to serve. It will be different for each of us. I might not understand your calling, nor you mine. That is why we are cautioned about judging the spiritual condition of others.
We have enough to be concerned about in keeping ourselves on track. Keep in mind that you have as much reason to rejoice and praise God as the children of Israel.
