In doing some research on the word “abomination” (8441) I came across a statement on one of the 19th century resources that claimed the ancient Egyptians considered the cow to be the “most sacred animal” and they would not eat it.
In modern times we have the Hindus of India that have a very similar belief. It is the source of our expression “sacred cow.” This made me wonder if there is some ancient connection between Egypt and India. The origins of Hinduism are lost in time. Could it be that at least part of their belief system came to them from Egypt?
There are other possibilities. It could be that cows are sacred and we in the Christian tradition don’t know it. It could also be that the people seeing these “parallels” are the same types of scholars, desperate to be published, who come up with all kinds of ridiculous links. You hear them in regard to the laws of Israel. You hear them comparing Mithra with Jesus.
Any way you look at it there will be a lot of people surprised the moment after they die. Of course, I don’t believe it will be me.
