I am wondering if Coffee Snobs are examples of the Emperor’s New Clothes.
A lot of claims are made. On occasion I will watch a video by someone who has a channel on coffee. I have seen these gurus prepare two brews with slightly different technique, taste them and comment on the subtle differences. I have listened while they explained the chemistry of the “bloom” of coffee. It is interesting but they tend to conflict with each other. How long do you let a French press brew before pouring out the result? There are many opinions.
I can tell differences but they occur between different brews of the same coffee as much as between different varieties of coffee. I am aware that I lack discernment in my taste buds as well as my fashion sense. I can tell the difference between a really good cup of coffee and a really bad cup but not much distinctiveness in between.
I am ready to ask, “Why is the coffee naked?” I am ready to question if there is really that much difference. In the mean time I will just keep enjoying it however it comes out.
