Have you been reading about the crusade for lab produced beef? I find myself curious about the cost, flavor and nutrition. Of course I felt that way about sushi, too. There is also the point that if the industry can get a government mandate they may be able to have a monopoly on the meat industry and I don’t think that will work out well.
My interest in this post goes another direction. The roasts and steaks that you all love come from muscle. I know it sounds gross but it is the truth. I was wondering, if they can clone muscle meat to eat, could they not clone heart muscle for more urgent needs. And how about things like lungs and a pancreas.
It would seem that if you grew the heart muscle with cells cloned from the patient you would be able to overcome the rejection that is a normal part of transplants. It would also deal a potential death blow to organ harvesting.
I emotionally prefer my beef from the hoof but I could get behind replacement parts for those in serious need.

Dunno why I lost my taste for meat. Maybe the meat is processed differently than it was years ago; it just doesn't taste the same as it did years ago. Maybe it is just me.
ReplyDeleteI savor a choice New York strip steak 3-times a year (each a special occasion) at a favorite high-end restaurant.
I can't imagine what lab grown meat would taste like.

I would guess there are multiple reasons in addition to the fact that our taste buds start to die off.
DeleteThe quality is going down. The really good stuff is going to those who are willing to fork it over. I remember several years ago when my son served us some steaks he had grilled and they were marvelous. He shared that he had paid over $30 dollars a pound, at Cosco no less.
Some is how the meat is raised and processed. We had some "grass fed" beef, again years ago, that was palatable but had a taste that made us reluctant to try it again. Recently we have bought some from a local supplier and it is fine.
I think there is also a bit of GMO type stuff going on with fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes have been bred to have tough skins so a machine can pick them. Much of the grains we eat are altered so they can't reproduce. The list goes on.
No, I don't think it is just you.
