Opus 2022-344: Advent Calendar: Day 15, Assumed

Behind door 15 we have a door.  This represents the innkeeper that is in some pageants, some Christmas cards and some posters but is not mentioned in the Bible.  All it says is that there was no room for the baby Jesus in the inn.  I would imagine they had to talk to someone if they were allowed access to the manger.  Maybe they had the “No Vacancy” sign on.

It always amazes me how often we assume things that are not stated.  The Christmas story is loaded with traditions.  Most of them are relatively harmless.  They add to the atmosphere.  The problem is when people find out they are not true and then think the whole story is a lie.

I think you can be honest and have fun at the same time.  I don’t think we had any Santa Claus visuals in our house since we had children.  That didn’t mean that we did not let them enjoy the stockings hung by the chimney with care.  Our story was that the wise men brought them and we stuck to it.  It doesn’t hurt to point out the parts that are tradition.  It can even open the door for some serious discussions about what Christmas is about and things like sin, redemption and the cross.

Merry Christmas
