Opus 2022-331: Put X Back into Xmas

You have all seen the signs, “Put Christ back into Christmas.”

I am sympathetic to the statement but it seems to me we are going the other way.  Recently I was listening to a discussion of the great theology that is found in the Christmas carols.  I would agree but Christmas carols are being shown the door just like hymns have been shoved aside.  The fact that they teach Biblical concepts is a big part of the reason.

I still love the Christmas season but I am forced to create it in my home.  It used to be I could set the radio to a certain station and be blessed by non-stop Christmas music.  Sure there was an occasional Jingle Bells and White Christmas but in the proper ratio that still adds something.  That changed gradually.  I finally did not bother any more because while they still claimed to offer the service it was now non-stop narcissism of recording artists who felt a need to put out a Christmas Album.  I am sorry that their current squeeze didn’t make them the center of the world but I am thinking in terms of the Incarnation.

So I thought that maybe we should go to the big X.  I heard someone once claim that the X represented the Greek letter that began the name of Christ.  That sounds pretty even if that wasn’t where it came from.  We might be able to work with it though.  We could have a contest to see who could design the most theological drawing of X.  It would need to be so blatant that no one could miss the meaning.  It might be enough to shock people into wondering just what is going on.

Until that happens I will continue to plug my Christmas flash drive into the USB port and create the atmosphere that leads me into worship for the reason we have the season.
