Some things never change.
Several times in meetings I have heard speakers talk about studies that listed the problems in school from years ago and compare them to the problems of today. I have read the same type of information on the internet. Who knows if there was really a survey or whether it was done correctly. You know how that goes. In spite of that, both lists, as different as they were, listed gum chewing as a problem.
Some things never change.
I have never understood the attraction of chewing gum. I see someone who seems to be intelligent and well dressed when suddenly they start doing their imitation of a cow resting in the pasture. I wonder if they have an emotional problem or something. Once when I was trying to take my mind off food, I bought some sugar free gum and started chewing. It lasted until my wife caught me and wanted to know what was wrong.
I think of chewing gum as degenerate. It is just a hang up I have. If you are a chewer then ignore me. To me chewing gum is like cigarettes. People who use them don’t know what a trash can is for. You can drive or walk through some areas and the ground looks like a bad case of acne. It is covered with spots and butts.
I guess there could be worse habits than chewing gum. I should know, I have enough of them.

I think it's a bit of a crutch for nervous people. I have no problem with it as long as they don't pop it or dispose of it improperly. Of course there were a lot of tobacco chewers in my neck of the woods when I was young, so gum seemed preferable to spitting tobacco juice.
