Opus 2020-095: Prophecy from the Past

I just finished a book called Slouching Towards Gomorrah by Robert Bork.  I don’t tend to read books when they are hot off the press.  First the price needs to go down to where I am willing to spend the nickels rather than dollars.  Then the theme needs to endure.  This book is now twenty-four years old so it was time to read it.

As I came to the end Bork was looking for things that might bring the country back to its roots and allow us to continue living in liberty.  Current actions by the government made this bit stand out as prophetic.

“What may be feasible is a moral regeneration and an intellectual understanding capable of defeating modern liberalism.  It a discussion of that possibility with friends, we came up with four events that could produce a moral and spiritual regeneration:  a religious revival; the revival of public discourse about morality; a cataclysmic war; or a deep economic depression.”, p. 336

The current panic over a virus has caused the passing of a multi-trillion pork bill with more in sight.  People are not working.  A depression is being foretold by the doomsayers.  We look at it with fear and trembling, fearing that it will bring on a police state.  It is also possible it will drive people back to the values that made us the land of the free.

My hope is for a genuine religious revival.  Of course financial hard times might cause that to happen.

We live in interesting times.
