Opus 2020-089: Should-a-Beens: Fantasy Jobs

We live in a fantasy world of easy answers.

One of the cries we have heard is to stop having China make everything for us.  Wise voices call for moving the factories out of China.  I like that idea, but they make an assumption that is not necessarily true.  They assume the factories will come back to the rust belt of the United States.  It probably won’t happen.  Some will return but the question will be for how long?  When the environmental whack jobs start in with the lawsuits it won’t take long to look for not so green pastures.  When the regulators and unions step up there will be other options.  Keep in mind that Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand would love to host all of these factories.

American workers could make money for the company but American job killers don’t really want that to happen.

So get out of China.  That is a win.  But don’t assume that the jobs will be coming to an empty field near you.

  1. I've always cringed when someone hollers "We need a law!" However, I believe that at the very least there should be a law that all military parts are made in America, preferably all medicines and we need a country of origin labeling.

    1. I agree with your basic premise. The problem is we already have a bunch of laws and regulations that need to be voided. I would even settle for genuine free trade. It almost sounds like I believe in unicorns.
