Opus 2017-325: Monday Pulpit: High Church

Sunday I was visiting another church.  On the whole is was a time I was able to worship.  I only had one problem, they served communion.

Normally communion is not a problem.  I know that if I am attending a Lutheran church I don’t join the congregation.  They practice what is called closed communion.  You need to be a member of their denomination or local church.  I would never dream of taking the host in a Catholic church.  They would consider that blasphemy.

The problem was they used real wine.  I thought I could deal with that.  I don’t drink.  The communion wine is very low alcohol.  The cup was small.  And I made it through just fine.  The problem is the taste stayed with me for hours.  I kept tasting rotten grape juice.  It would not go away.

One reason I don’t drink is it all tastes like what it is, food products gone bad.  It even smells that way.  It has been so long since I had anything alcoholic that I had forgotten how bad it is.

I guess I can use the occasion to remind me of the sacrifice that Jesus made.  Every time I get an after taste I can remember His death.

  1. Haha. They use the cheapest wine they can get, so that makes it worse. You'd probably have no problem with a sweet wine, but they don't want to make it pleasurable, so you were just out of luck. I like some wines, but I've never drank much at all and don't drink any due to meds these days. Write it off to experience! ;-)

    1. Somehow I don't detect a lot of sympathy.
