I feel like Horatius getting to the bridge and trying to save Rome by engaging the barbarian rear guard.
We have been told to greet the students at the door. This is supposed to show them that we care and sensing we care, they will care, enter the classroom and get ready to learn. This is one of the modern techniques that is being pushed at my school to improve the level of education. It is based in the new age view that mankind is good and wholesome and given the opportunity, people will do the right thing.
In reality, being not totally stupid, students take my standing at the door as an opportunity to slam books, move furniture, play grab-ass and participate in general mayhem. For them the “right thing” is to take advantage of the situation.
I don’t need to be told to stand in the door and greet students. I do that anyway, or I try to, but I am also aware that I can’t be in the door, monitoring the hall and keep an eye on the classroom at the same time.
I don’t believe everything my fearless leaders propose. That is amazing considering I also went to public school.

I'm guessing that the school you attended was much like mine, although at a later date than me. I was expected to behave myself, to learn what was being taught and to go from there prepared for life in the real world. Becoming a disappointment to my parents and teachers wasn't an option. But then, that was before Precious Little Snowflakes appeared on the scene.
ReplyDeleteYou would be amazed at how many parents stand up for the PLS in meetings. Expectations have changed and the results are coming in. Selfishness is being expressed with no criticism all around us. Every once in awhile I am glad I am getting old. Then I remember I have children.

It was 40 years ago that I was in school, and ev en then, there was a lot of BS thatb served no purpose other than to make some school shrink feel good.
ReplyDeleteAs you observe, this stuff did not appear whole cloth over night. It has been a long time in the making. Go watch West Side Story and listen to the gang of thugs sing to officer K.
