Opus 2015-38: The American Cream

“Land of opportunity” is taking on a new meaning.

People have always looked at America as a place to escape the restrictions of their homeland.  In the past the desire might have been to worship as you please, to escape the limitations of a class system, to chose your own trade or to even as basic a dream as to own land.  America was the land of opportunity.

It used to mean a country that allowed the freedom to work hard, be successful and live a good life.  It might be rough on you but your children would use your sacrifice for a springboard.  There was a belief that the cream would rise to the top.  The only real limitations were in your own self.  That freedom recognized the freedom to fail as much as the freedom to succeed.

Now we have becoming the land the secure and the guaranteed.  An ever increasing number believe in the promise of government handouts and go through the day expecting others to provide for the needs they are not willing to work for.  We are all cream now.

The promise has become promises and in the process the dream is dying.
